Carla Sweeney’s victory in the 1500m was the big highlight for the club in the 2022 National Track and Field Championships held in Morton Stadium, Santry. A comfortable win in heat 1 put her through to the final where she ran her own gutsy race to win from the front to the enormous delight of the rest of the club. Special congratulations has to go to her Rathfarnham WSAF AC coach Paul Fleming.
Mitchell Byrne qualified for the 1500m final from heat one. The final started slowly so Mitchell made a brave aggressive attack to try and out manoeuvre the opposition. It saw him put some distance between him and the pack but unfortunately he was reeled back in and ultimately finished 13th.He’ll be back stronger next year!
Zoie Richie had an outstanding Nationals performance by any standard but especially since she is only 16 years old. She came a fantastic 7th in the 800m final having qualified 6th heat 1. There is a lot more to come so watch this space!
David Scanlon had a solid performance to come 14th in the 5000m. Cillian McCabe was in the 400m and ran a very good 52:30 in Heat 3 and Lee Byrne came 7th in his 800m heat in 2:04.10. Congratulations to all our athletes!
